The Office Christmas Party
Some pitfalls to avoid during the office Christmas party:-
| |
A Cautionary Tale
Research shows that over £100m was spent last year by UK businesses on annual Christmas parties, but the current downturn and the inevitability of a recession in the UK will mean that most companies will be less extravagant this year.
The company Christmas party is often the talk of the office for many months afterwards, but not always for the right reasons…
We’ve all heard the stories about the random drunken declarations of love, the slagging off the boss while they are standing right behind you and there is usually a snog under the mistletoe that will talked about in the office for years to come. Giggling behind your back, sly looks from colleagues, written warnings, sexual harassment allegations and even a P45 can all stem from drinking too much at the annual event.
Follow our simple tips to make sure that your reputation and your job are still intact the following morning and make sure that you do not experience that horrible feeling in your stomach as you wake up and cringe as you remember what you did the night before.
Know your limit!
Some people lack social confidence, and for those people, the obvious solution is to drink as quickly as possible so as to lose these inhibitions. This is a risky strategy as it just increases the chances of doing or saying something that you will regret in front of your colleagues. If you must binge, then try to drink a glass of water between each alcoholic drink- it will take longer to get drunk and you will not wake up with such a bad hangover..
Do not discuss other colleagues
It’s tempting to gossip about other colleagues that you work with but this is unprofessional. Your colleagues might wonder what you will say when their own back is turned.
Flirt at your own risk
With a gutful of wine and beer swilling about, you might find that the girl from accounts, who you always considered to be pretty ugly, is looking very attractive in the dim lights. But flirt at your peril you may get a slap in the face for being drunk, or worse still, she might drag you onto the dance floor for a smooch and a kiss in front of the whole office. However don’t forget that you have to work with her for the other 364 days of the year and will have the embarrassment of bumping into her in the office kitchen the next morning. Your colleagues will find the entire episode hilarious so remember- flirt with extreme caution.
Know when your night is over
You do not have to be the last one standing at the end of the night when the lights come up. If you feel you have peaked early or are in likely danger of embarrassing yourself then make your excuses and leave. Better to jump in a taxi than to disgrace yourself by demanding the bar staff serve you another drink when they are meant to be closing. Try to avoid the temptation of trying to be the party animal by suggesting that everyone goes to a strip club and do not fall asleep in the toilets.
An office Christmas party doesn’t need to end in disaster, and the worst pitfalls can be avoided if you’re sensible and pace yourself. Remember, your co-workers will generally forgive any drunken misdemeanours but they won’t necessarily be forgotten.
You see your co-workers nearly every day and you need their respect. Be conscious of your actions and if you can remember even one of these tips on the big night you are more likely to wake up the next morning with a bit of a hangover and smile on your face, rather than with that minger from accounts snoring next to you.
